Close the day when cash and UPI do not match

The uncomfortable moment in a Mumbai restaurant is not the rush. It is 11:30pm, when the drawer and the phone tell two different stories.

Why the two totals separate

Cash is physical and gets used for change, a quick purchase, or a payment that was never written down. UPI lands as a notification. If the same phone also receives personal payments, a restaurant payment and a household payment look identical an hour later.

Split tables make it worse. One guest pays half by UPI, the other was going to pay cash and then leaves. The table is marked paid because a notification arrived. The cash portion is still missing, and the next group is already seated.

Close in the same hour as the rush

Do not wait until midnight to understand lunch. After the lunch queue ends, compare cash and UPI with the orders from that service while you still remember the odd note. Do the same after dinner.

At shift change, look at open orders before the next person starts. A spoken handover drops the one table that was not settled. The list should be empty, or the open tables should be named.

A close that takes ten minutes

Count the drawer. Read the cash total on the screen. Write down the gap, even if you already know the reason, such as change given or a payment you pulled out for milk. An unwritten gap becomes a bigger gap next week.

Then read the UPI total and match it to the restaurant account, not to every alert on a personal phone. Do this after lunch and after dinner. Midnight is too late to remember which table paid half.
